Northern Colorado has some of the most stunning locations for photo sessions of any kind. So if you need a location for your maternity photos, family photos, engagement or couples photos, basically any session of any kind- Northern Colorado definitely has the perfect spot! And keep in mind this isn’t an exhaustive list by any means, these are simply locations clients I have worked with have chosen time and time again due to the views, the accessibility, and how beautiful these locations look in photos! 

Rocky Mountain National Park- Estes Park, CO 

A classic Colorado photo session location option, but we HAD to start with this, because it is just so beautiful and gorgeous. Located just outside of Estes Park, Colorado, it one of the most stunning and most travelled to national parks (and for good reason!!). My favorite places to take photos here include:

Lily Lake– It is a little outside the park, and is so stunning in the fall when all the aspen trees are starting to turn yellow. It has a beautiful lake, and hiking trails with pine trees. 

Sprague Lake– Another stunning lake with a half mile walking loop around it. Super stunning views of the rockies, and absolutely beautiful at any time of day, but especially in the morning or evening for sunset. 

Beaver Meadows Loop– Not as popular as other locations in the park, but one of my favorites. It’s a beautiful open space, surrounded by hiking trails and beautiful tall pine trees. Such a stunning location for any nature loving couples! There is so much variety in spots for photos, that truly you can’t go wrong. 

Trail Ridge Road– A sought after and highly requested location, and for good reason! Located at the heart of RMNP, it is often referred to as the “Highway to the Sky” due to its high elevation. It is so stunning, and it feels like you are at the top of the world when you’re there. However, due to it’s inconsistent weather it is closed for the majority of the year for safety reasons, and even when it is open it can often be cloudy or raining or even snowing. But when the weather is good, the views cannot be beat! 

One thing to note is that RMNP requires timed entry permits in addition to a park pass, in 2026 the timed entry passes are in effect from the end of May through the middle of October. There are two types of of timed entry passes, regular timed entry which covers the whole park with the exception of the bear lake areas from 9am-2pm. And the timed entry+ bear lake road from 5am-6pm. Old Town Foco- Fort Collins, CO 

This is one of my favorite locations for sessions, and it is so easy to see why. This historic part of Fort Collins was what downtown Disney was designed after. Think gorgeous architecture, historic details, and beautiful lighting all year long. This is one of my favorite spots for couples sessions, and portraits of any kind! 

No permits required, though some of the parking is paid from 10am-6pm. 

Lake Estes- Estes Park, CO 

If you want Rocky Mountain National Park style views, without the lines or permits this is the perfect spot! There are direct views of the Rockies from nearly every spot around the nearly 4 mile loop around the lake, and every spot is gorgeous. This spot if located at the heart of Estes Park, and there are plenty of delicious places to eat, and lots of fun shopping in downtown Estes Park! 

No permits required, and there is plenty of free parking either at a nearby dog park, or at the parking garage next to the lake. 

Chautauqua Park- Boulder, CO 

I know I have said a lot of spots are my favorite, but this one is a spot I go to time and time again and love more and more each time I go. Though not technically in Northern Colorado, it had to be included because of how iconic it is. If you want mountain views, but don’t want to be too far from Denver, this is THE spot. Located in Boulder, Colorado it is right against the flat irons and is stunning anytime of day! While this spot if more popular in the evening for golden hour, it is also so stunning in the morning for the fresh morning light! This is a stunning location for families and family sessions, couples and engagements, and portraits of any kind. There is a permit required here, but it is a multi-visit one that I buy once at the beginning of the year and don’t charge my clients for it. Parking is paid during summer weekends and holidays, and as of June 2026 starts at $2.50 per hour.

City Park- Fort Collins, CO 

An unusual location for sure, but such a beautiful one! Located towards the north western part of Fort Collins, it is perfect for family sessions due to its accessibility! It has a cutie little lake, lots of fields and trees, and a hill right in the middle. It also has the most stunning golden light in the evening that simply cannot be beat! It is perfect for families who wants a location that is easy to take their kids too, but is still beautiful and photographs well.

No permits are required here, and there is plenty of free parking around and inside the park.
