In-home sessions have become some of my absolute favorite types of sessions to photograph, especially for maternity and family sessions. It can seem intimidating at first to take photos in your own home, but it is the perfect option for a photo session if you are nervous or don’t like having your photo taken, because then it is just like us hanging out. Low pressure, low key, just fun vibes and beautiful photos. It is also nice, because then your photos will feel nostalgic and be timeless. Like the types of photos your mom and grandma would print and put into a photo album. Documenting the space of the season of life you are in, and the spaces your kids are/will grow up in.
Maddie and Brian opted for a maternity session in their home in Denver, Colorado to celebrate the soon to be arrival of their first son.
I met them two years ago when I photographed their engagement session in Rocky Mountain National Park. We timed it out their session so we got all of the beautiful fall colors in the Aspen trees, and had a chance to really connect over our shared faith. They even did a bible study during their session, and it was so special to document. Last year they got married, and celebrated up in the mountains of Colorado.

Now with the arrival of their baby boy, they wanted something more simple, but just as meaningful. So they decided to do their session in their home, as it was their first house together and where they planned on raising their son, and other future children.
We started off the session by sticking gems to Maddie’s belly, and heading to the kitchen to take advantage of the beautiful morning sunlight coming through their windows. We focused on details of her belly, photos of the flowers she brought as a prop for the session, and sweet moments of her and Brian together in the space. We also made sure to make sure their dog Duncan, who was also at their engagement session, made a few appearances for this part.

Next, we took all the gems off and headed out front to take some photos by their front door, which they loved because of it’s beautiful red color. Once again, Duncan was included, and when not having his photo taken he walked around the front yard and kept watch while we took photos.

After staging a few photos in front of the house, we headed to their front room for photos in front of their wedding photos that they had framed on the wall. In this space I wanted the vibes to feel cozy, comforting, and nurturing- so they sat down on the couch and read a story to their baby together (“Oh The Places You’ll Go” by Dr Suess), while I focused on getting wide shots and details of the moment. Duncan, of course, was right there with us the entire time.

After the story finished we moved to the carpet to get some photos with Duncan and Maddie’s baby bump. Lots of close ups here, the focus was simply to get Maddie’s dream shot of Duncan’s nose on her stomach. Once we got that photo we decided to move on.

Maddie went to change into her second outfit and from there Maddie, Brian, Duncan, and I finished the session by going outside to take photos in their backyard and greenway behind their house. Here we did a lot more dynamic movements since we had the space for it. We did a lot of walking photos, full body shots, and some more solo photos of Maddie. Truly such the perfect end to a sweet and intentional maternity photo session.
